”If you want to be happy for an hour, get drunk; If you want to be happy for three days, get married; If you want to be happy forever, make a garden.”
Smart and nice Chinese proverb; Thanks to this saying I decided to search an information about the origins of gardens.
Gardens and plant cultivation can be dated to around 3000 years ago (in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia). The reason plants were cultivated was not only their medical benefits but also their beauty.
The difference between a garden one has ‘at home’ and a botanic garden is defined by criterias. According to the certain criterias a garden is considered to be a botanic/al garden and to make the classification does not seems to be an easy thing to do.
The world’s first botanic garden were physic gardens of Italy. The first of these physic gardens was the garden of University of Pisa, created by Luca Gihni in 1543.
Later, in 1545 was created the botanical garden of Padova (Italy), the world’s first original botanical garden with scientific basis. Garden cares for the preservation of various rare species; Since 1997 it is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Not alone the garden maintains rare and old plants but it also supports the development of many modern scientific disciplines.
