I remember at my early school age we used to write little sketches, one of the famous was about the seasons and their particularities.
Summer. All green around, the sun is shining, hot, joyful, holiday time!
Winter. Its getting cold, birds are flying away, the earth is covering with a white blanket…
Spring. The nature starts to wake up and green again. Birds are coming back, one can hear their singing, while the sun is shining…
And autumn, beautiful season, quiet with a brilliance of colors, … ‘it is autumn, the nature gains different colors, leaves are changing their green color into yellow, red, brown and later fall down…’
Writing sketches is a nice thing and do you remember why leaves change their green color into other colors, like yellow, red, brown…?
I did not, so I found out that there are three factors influence autumn leaf color: leaf pigment, length of night and weather.
There are three types of pigments involved in autumn colors:
-Carotenoids – yellow pigments. Protects leaves from the byproduct of photosynthesis.
-Anthocyanin- red pigments, protect leaves from the sun.
-Chlorophyl -gives leaves a green color. An important and necessary pigment for photosynthesis.
